A perfect balance of theory and practice

What inspired you to apply for this programme?
I wanted to get onto this programme because I felt like I needed to acquire some new skills and knowledge. During my undergrad degree, I did a lot of performing and I just wanted to gain more knowledge within the music industries which this programme provided me with. I came to Sheffield to do music and philosophy undergrad degree and I liked it so much that I stayed for my master's. The university environment and the city itself were so welcoming that continuing my education here felt like the natural next step for developing my career in the music sector.
What did you like most about the programme?
It is hard to say what I like most about the programme because there have been plenty of things that I enjoyed. However, my favourite thing about the programme was the opportunities we had to get practical within the music industry. The programme offers a variety of modules within the music department and the management school which complement each other very well. This balance between theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience has been invaluable, allowing me to immediately apply what I've learned in lectures to real-world music industry situations and projects.
How has the programme prepared you for your future career?
This programme has massively helped with me moving forwards with my future and my career by giving me the ability to explore the music industry further and gain skills that I just haven't had the opportunity to learn before. This programme has given me a broader understanding about the music industry, opened up many more doors and also broadened my network in Sheffield, which is going to be vital for a successful career within the music industry. I now feel equipped with both the knowledge and professional connections to take meaningful steps forward in my chosen field.
How did the faculty provide you with support?
Both departments have been very supportive throughout my degree. Firstly by the academics being very approachable and creating many opportunities for us to have one-on-one sessions as well as group sessions. The staff have a genuine interest in student success and make themselves available whenever needed. Whether I had questions about assignments, industry connections, or career advice, I always found faculty members willing to help. This level of support creates a nurturing learning environment where you feel comfortable taking creative risks and exploring new areas of interest within the music industries.
What do you enjoy most about living in Sheffield?
The short answer to what I enjoy about Sheffield is everything! But if I had to give a few reasons why, it's because it's a very diverse city, it's very welcoming, there are many students you will be able to connect with, everything is at a walking distance, and I also love how green Sheffield is. The music scene has really surprised me because it is so vibrant and there is something you can find pretty much every night, whether you want to head down to an open mic or watch a live music gig, there's always something going on.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying?

If you're even slightly curious about working in the music industries—go for it. This programme offers so much in terms of knowledge, practical experience, and personal development. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to explore the creative sector more seriously, especially if you’re not sure exactly where you fit yet. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you arrive—the course gives you the space to experiment, discover your strengths, and build a pathway that’s right for you. I’d recommend it to anyone with a passion for music.
